You find a product. You check the margins. They look great. You go to list it on Amazon — and you get this:
"Listing limitations apply. You need approval to list in this category."
Welcome to gating. It stops almost every new seller in their tracks. Here's the good news: most gated categories can be unlocked, and it's not as complicated as it looks.
What "Gated" Actually Means
Amazon restricts who can sell certain products. A "gated" product means Amazon requires approval before you can list it. "Ungating" is simply the process of getting that approval.
Amazon gates products at three levels:
- Category gates — entire departments like Grocery, Beauty, Toys & Games, or Health & Personal Care require approval
- Brand gates — specific brands (Nike, Disney, Lego, Apple) are locked even if the category is open
- ASIN gates — individual product listings that require approval, even when the brand and category are both open
You might be approved to sell in Grocery but still hit a brand gate on a specific manufacturer. Each level is separate.
Why Amazon does this: Gating protects customers from counterfeits, ensures safety in regulated areas (supplements, kids' products), and keeps brands happy by limiting listings to authorized sellers. It's not personal — it's quality control at scale.
How to Check If a Product Is Gated (Before You Buy Anything)
Never buy inventory before checking. Here's how to check in 30 seconds:
- Open the Amazon Seller app on your phone
- Tap the camera icon and scan the product barcode (or search by name)
- If you see a green checkmark → you're approved to sell it
- If you see "Requires Approval" or "Listing Limitations Apply" → it's gated
You can also check in Seller Central desktop: go to Catalog → Add a Product, search the ASIN, and look for the approval button.
Do this before every sourcing trip or online arbitrage buy. Finding out after the fact is an expensive lesson.
How to Actually Get Ungated
Here's the process that works for most categories:
Step 1: Apply through Seller Central
In Seller Central, navigate to Catalog → Add a Product, search the gated product or category, and click "Request Approval." Amazon will tell you what documents it needs.
Step 2: Get a valid invoice
This is where most beginners get stuck. Amazon wants proof you're sourcing legitimately. A valid invoice must:
- Be from an authorized distributor or wholesaler (not a retail store receipt)
- Show your business name and address matching your Seller Central account
- List the products with quantities (typically 10 units minimum, sometimes more)
- Be dated within the last 90 days
- Include the supplier's business name, address, and contact info
A Walmart or Target receipt won't work. You need a real wholesale invoice from a supplier.
Step 3: Submit and wait
Upload the invoice directly in Seller Central when requested. Most category approvals come back within 1–3 business days. Brand approvals can take longer or may be denied — some brands (like Nike) are essentially impossible to ungate unless you're an authorized retailer.
Tip: Some categories auto-approve based on your account health and sales history. As you build a track record as a seller, Amazon loosens restrictions automatically. Newer accounts face more gates.
Categories New Sellers Can Usually Sell in Right Away
Not everything requires approval. These categories are typically open to new accounts without any ungating:
- Books (new and used)
- Home & Kitchen
- Sports & Outdoors
- Office Products
- Tools & Home Improvement
- Pet Supplies (most brands)
- Toys & Games (outside Q4 restrictions)
If you're just starting out, these categories are the path of least resistance. Build your seller metrics here, then tackle gated categories once your account has history.
What to Do When Amazon Rejects Your Ungating Request
A rejection isn't permanent. If Amazon denies your request:
- Read the rejection reason carefully — often it's a documentation issue, not a hard no
- Fix the specific problem (wrong invoice format, address mismatch, etc.) and reapply
- For brand gates: contact the brand directly and ask to become an authorized reseller — this is often the only path for locked brands
- For category rejections: try purchasing from a different distributor and resubmitting with their invoice
One thing to absolutely avoid: paid "ungating services" that promise to get you approved for $50–$100. Most are scams that provide fake invoices. Getting caught with fraudulent documents will get your account suspended — permanently.
